1. THE TRAILER
A first glimpse into the visual world of FolkROrica.
2. THE CONCEPT
FolkROrica is an original visual storytelling project inspired by Romanian folklore, rituals and the symbolic relationship between people and nature.
Rather than documenting traditions literally, the project reimagines them through a contemporary cinematic language — combining ritual gestures, natural landscapes, traditional symbols, costume, sound and atmosphere.
FolkROrica is conceived as an ongoing series of films, each exploring different fragments of Romanian folklore and cultural memory. The films will be released on a dedicated YouTube channel, currently in development.
3. VISUAL LANGUAGE
ATMOSPHERE
Natural landscapes, available light and a restrained colour palette shape the atmosphere of FolkROrica. Each setting becomes part of the narrative, creating a visual world suspended somewhere between reality, memory and ritual.
DETAIL
Small gestures, textures and symbolic objects bring the experience closer. Fabrics, flowers, water, fire and handcrafted elements are framed intimately, turning detail into an essential part of the visual storytelling.
FROM SKETCH TO SCREEN
THE CLOAK
The cloak began as a reinterpretation of the clothing traditionally associated with ancient Dacian women — reduced to a simple, flowing silhouette and brought into a contemporary visual language.
I designed the piece from scratch, preserving the sense of draping and movement while introducing applied bands inspired by Romanian traditional motifs. The result was never intended as a historical reconstruction, but as a costume that could carry traces of the past into the visual world of FolkROrica.
The first version existed only as a sketch. Then it became a small family collaboration: I designed it, chose the details and visual direction — and my mother brought it to life at the sewing machine. Somehow, that process became part of the concept itself: an idea inspired by traditional clothing, reimagined by one generation and physically made by another, before finally becoming part of the film.
TRADITIONAL ATTIRE
The contemporary folk costume brings the story closer to present-day Romania. It features the ie — the traditional Romanian embroidered blouse — and the năframă, a traditional headscarf worn by women, both enduring elements of Romanian folk attire.
THE SETTING
The filming approach shifted with each scene. Wider sequences were shot on location with a Sony FDR-AX43A 4K camera, using natural landscapes as part of the visual narrative, while a smartphone was used for selected close-ups and more intimate perspectives. A RØDE Wireless PRO dual-channel microphone system was used to capture subtle, layered sounds and the smallest acoustic details that shape the ASMR experience.
For detail-driven sequences, small sets were built at home using carefully selected props, natural materials and traditional objects. Rather than recreating complete environments, each setup was designed around what the camera needed to see — transforming simple spaces into fragments of the FolkROrica world.
POST-PRODUCTION
The project was edited and assembled in Adobe After Effects 2026 on a 2024 MacBook Pro, bringing together the original footage, sound design, colour work, typography and visual effects into the final cinematic narrative.
Where the story required perspectives that could not be captured within the production setup — particularly aerial views — selected licensed footage from Adobe Stock was integrated into the edit. These shots were used selectively, complementing the original material while maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the film.
